Changes To The TripAdvisor Platform And How They Will Affect You

Back in September, TripAdvisor announced that they would be bringing a whole host of changes to their platform soon.

Last week, they launched the biggest change of them all: a travel feed, similar to the feeds on Facebook or Instagram.

The Need for Feed

Why this change, all of a sudden?

TripAdvisor’s co-founder, Stephen Kaufer, found that travel experiences differ from person to person, even if they’re visiting the same city. Upon asking TripAdvisor users, the company also found that 66% prioritized reading reviews while planning a trip, while 62% prioritized recommendations and suggestions from their friends and family.

While reviews have always been a staple on TripAdvisor, they wanted to harness the potential of travelers relying on suggestions by friends and family in order to provide a complete planning experience.

Users can follow pages, make connections or just search for a place they want to visit, and the feed will throw up not only accommodation choices, restaurants and activities but posts from people who are actually there.

“When searching a particular destination, the feed automatically narrows the scope of the information displayed to that particular geographic location. For example, members planning a trip to Paris may see a food critic’s article on the best restaurant in the city, an influencer’s travel guide of “must do's,” and a friend’s review of a new hotel near the Eiffel Tower,” said TripAdvisor.

How Does This Affect Your Hotel

TripAdvisor reviews will become more important than ever. People will able to share their experiences through photographs and videos, and these posts will make up the majority of the travel feed.

People visiting your hotel will be able to update their experiences in real time, and recent reviews will show up in the feeds of people searching for your location. Beef up your guest experience to boost your chances of showing up more often through reviews posted on the travel feed, thus boosting room bookings.

Hotels can also use these feeds to promote discounts, offers, activities, and other special offerings, thus making it a great outlet for businesses to reach out to their ideal guests directly.

The addition of a travel feed means big things not only for TripAdvisor but also for the hotels that use it as their primary marketing tool.
